A parents worst nightmare

I got a phone call this morning about 20 minutes after Ashley's ride had picked her up for school. "Mom, we got in a car accident." Of course my first question was, "Are you guys okay?" She said her shoulder really hurt but everyone was fine. She handed the phone to the police officer who told me all of the kids had their seatbelts on and he gave me directions to the scene. I wasn't prepared for what I saw when I pulled up...In my head I'm thinking minor fender bender...I turned the corner and saw the road coned off, two fire trucks, police car, ambulance and the SUV Ashley was in UPSIDE DOWN in the middle of the road. The entire roof was caved in. I guess the driver hit some black ice and when he tried to correct it rolled the car. Ashley was already in the ambulance strapped to a backboard. The EMT told me it was just precaution since she complained of shoulder pain. I followed the ambulance to the hospital. She told the nurse her pain was a 10 on a scale of 1-10 but she wasn't crying so I didn't think it was that bad. (Obviously, she hasn't gone through child birth yet!!) However, when her x-ray came back it showed her right collar bone was broken. Guess she has a high pain tolerance or she was still full of adrenaline from the accident. They fitted her with a brace that pulls her shoulders back - that's when the tears started. It sucks to see your child in pain. We were out of the ER within about an hour which was miraculous. She's taken some Vicodin and is trying to rest. She's okay as long as she doesn't move, which means getting up to go to the bathroom is a joy. The phone is ringing off the hook though and I'm sure once school is out I'll have a house full of well wishers. Thank goodness for seat belts!!

Tracy, I am so glad that she's okay. Wow. That is a stressful scene, I can't imagine. My friends were in a fatal car accident driving to school the beginning of the year my freshman year. Not speeding, just being silly and distracted, the car hit a telephone pole going 40mph and five lives changed forever. ONly one fatality (after she spent nine months in a coma), but Chris' brother was launched from the back seat through the windshield and still shows the scars on his face, it was just a really big, life changing ordeal. I am so glad to hear they were all wearing their seatbelts. The kids in the car who were wearing their belts in the car I mention were all home that same day with sore muscles, while the three who weren't were out of school for months with injuries that they could never recover from.

I'll say a prayer of gratitude for your little one!

Oh, praise God she (and the others) are OK. I can't even imagine the feeling you must have had getting the call and seeing the scene! Praying for her quick recovery...and that she doesn't have to go to the bathroom too often. :o) Seriously though...give her a hug and my well wishes too!

Glad to hear that it wasn't more serious considering the extent of the accident!

I'm sure it will make Thanksgiving have new meaning this year!
